What is 316 Stainless Steel
What exactly is 316 Stainless Steel?
The addition of alloys is often done to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. The marine-grade stainless steel, is known as Type 316, is resistant to aggressive environments.
There are several different kinds that stainless steel 316 comes in. Most commonly used are L F, N and H variants. Each is slightly different, and each one is designed for reasons that are different. L refers to 316L as having higher carbon content than the 316.
of 316, 316L and 316 Stainless Steel Common Quality
While they are similar to Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have higher resistance to corrosion. They also are more robust at high temperatures. They also cannot be hardened via heat treatment. They can be easily bent and stretched.
Difference between 316 and 316L Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. But even with its higher carbon-content, 316L is very similar to 316 almost in every way. The cost is similar,, and both are durable and resistant, making it a suitable choice for extremely stressful conditions.
For projects that require a lot of welding is the superior choice as 316 is more susceptible to corrosion from welding more than an 316L (corrosion of the weld). However, 316L can be annealed to withstand welding attenuation. 316L is also a very ideal stainless steel to use in high temperatures and high corrosion, which is why it is so well-liked in marine and construction projects.
It is not clear if 316 or 316L is the cheapest option. The 304 is comparable to 304L however, the price is much lower. However, neither is as robust as the 317 and 317L which have a higher molybdenum content and better quality corrosion resistant overall.
