The government is run by the Executive Branch with The President being the head of it. The current President, Islam Karimov is said to rule with an iron fist and has since 1989. The Oliy Majlis or Cabinet of Ministers is window dressing. Healthcare is paid for by the state. The Constitution of Uzbekistan, Article 18 states “Any privileges may be granted solely by the law and shall conform to the principles of social justice.” The government insists on keeping a tight rein on the press despite the fact that the Uzbek Constitution forbids it. Radio, TV and newspapers are run by the state. Websites have strict rules and many are blocked from Uzbekistan because of content - any anti-government sentiments are forbidden. Independent businesses are discouraged from starting up. The prisons are known for the brutal torture by the guards. Women prisoners are often raped.
