Japan has so many natural disasters that their culture is steeped in adapting to the whole disaster process. For example, here is a webpage about a museum exhibit dedicated to their history of disaster, the Rekihaku Special Exhibition of the National Museum of Japanese History, “Documenting Disasters in Japan from 1703 to 2003”. They say:
“Located at the subduction zone of oceanic plates, Japan frequently experiences earthquakes, volcanic eruptions , and tsunamis, the earliest recorded disaster being that of the 684 Hakuho Quake. The number of tsunamis in Japan totals 195 over a 1,313 year period, averaging one event every 6.7 years, the highest rate of occurrence in the world.”
There is also a detailed list of Volcano Eruptions being tracked at Current Eruptions in Japan, provided by the VRC-ERI, Univ. of Tokyo.
