The history of Persia is littered with devastating earth quakes. Since the beginning of the 20th Century 126,000 Iranians have died in earthquakes and counting.
December 26, 2003 - Bam earthquake killed 30,000 people
June 1, 1990 - 60,000 people were killed in an earthquake near the Caspian Sea.
September 15, 1978 - Tabas-e-Golshan earthquake 15,000 to 20,000 people killed
April 10, 1972 - earthquake killed 5, 5057 people
August 31, 1968 - Dashat-e-Bayaz earthquake killed 10,000 people killed
September 1962 - earthquake killed 12,000 people killed
January 193 - earthquake 23,000 people killed
February 1909 - Silakhor earthquake killed 5,000
The Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) killed at least 1 million Iranians at the time and more continue to die to this day as a result of the chemical weapons used. The war cost Iran US$600 billion. Essentially, an entire generation of Iranians grew up who knew only war and poverty.
The drought of 2000 affected and estimated 37,000,000 Iranians. Iran continues to undergo desertification with periodic recurrent droughts. These droughts tend to cost upwards of US$1 billion each and are predicted to return for the near future.
