God's Wrath
Revealed Against Greece
Start with the fact that Greece today is but a sliver of its former glorious self. Because like all of the ancient civilizations, rather than be thankful to God when they prospered, they gave themselves all the glory, and used their prosperity as a platform for sin. From the Thera volcano in the 1600s BC to the fires in 2009, Greece has had the wrath of God pouring out on them. They made a science of idolatry, and have wrongly influenced scores of cultures and societies for the wrong. Here are some of the highlights:
In 2008 and 2009 riots broke out after a police officer killed a 15-year-old. Hundreds were mourning in the streets, leaving the Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis at a loss. His unpopular economic reforms were considered to be a significant factor in the rioting that was underway when the young man was shot and killed. International media have noted Greece’s reputation for a tradition of violence at student rallies, and it does not help that there is so much corruption and scandal within the prime minister’s close circles of friends and government officials.
Wildfires hit Greece in 2007 and again in 2009, with hundreds of separate blazes that created an ecological disaster. These forest fires raged in 2007 from the center of the country, killing dozens, forcing thousands to flee and leaving entire villages and cultivated landscapes destroyed. Nature lovers declared these fires an environmental catastrophe because of the greenery and semi-wildlife destroyed. In 2009 dozens of wildfires across the country included a fire at Mars Hill, right where Paul preached to them.
In 2005 a Cypriot airliner with 121 passengers slammed into a mountainous area north of Athens, scattering plane wreckage for miles, and killing everyone on board.
Major earthquakes in Greece occurred in 1954 (7.1), 1965 (four ranging from 6.3 – 7.1), 1999 (6.0), 2003 (6.3), 2006 (6.7), 2008 (6.9 and 6.4) and 2009 (6.4).
Sometime in the 1600s BC Thera erupted and spread volcanic ash in every direction from the Greek Island of Santorini. This may be the largest eruption ever recorded, resulting in massive tsunamis, and some believe this eruption was responsible for the disappearance of the Minoan culture on nearby Crete and the legendary island of Atlantis.
Greece is experiencing great unrest at this hour, because of the corrupt government, high unemployment, and what the people see as threats to their democracy. Greece is perfectly poised this day for more and greater God Smacks.
