2010 – Heavy rains caused mudslides which forced evacuations, cut off access to small villages, and killed multiple people.
2008 – Georgia became embroiled in a war with its neighbor Russia over the breakaway province of South Ossetia.
1991 – Georgia was struck by 2 major earthquakes, which destroyed multiple villages in the north central part of the country. In the mountainous regions of Georgia, earthquakes are a constant threat.
1989 – Anti-Soviet demonstrations in Tbilisi were violently broken up by the Soviet military, causing 20 deaths and hundreds of injuries.
1989 – Severe mudslides displaced thousands in southwestern Georgia and killed at least 52 people. Like earthquakes, mudslides are a constant threat.
1956 – A crowd of Stalin-worshiping protestors were fired upon by the Soviet military, resulting in 100s of casualties.
1924 – An uprising by Georgia against the Soviet Union was suppressed, and resulted in the extermination of 1000s of Georgians.
1795 – Georgia was attacked by the Persians, led by Shah Agha Mohammed Khan. The capital city of Tbilisi was burned to the ground, and more than 50,000 citizens were killed.
