On January 1, 1993, after 42 years of communist rule, the Czechoslovakian federation fell apart and was made into two separate and independent countries - the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Václav Havel, a playwright and dissident, was elected president over Czechoslovakia in 1989 and remained president for the Czech Republic after its independence. Havel worked to bring peace to the country by pardoning many prisoners from their communist captivity and by creating a “true democracy” for the Czech Republic. Something that Havel failed to recognize is that God sets the laws and statutes, and it is his duty to obey those laws and (in the position he is in) enforce those laws on the people of that country, and that peace is given by Him. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 in an attempt to bring peace to the country. In March 2003, Václav Klaus became the Czech Republic's second president.
