In addition to these natural disasters, there exists the possibility of chlorine gas spills and radiation poisoning due to industrial accidents. The Soviet-era Armenia Nuclear Power plant is located in Metsamor, approximately 30 kilometers southwest of Yerevan; Armenia is currently under international pressure to close the plant permanently, due to safety concerns.”
December 7, 1988 - A 6.9 magnitude earthquake killed up to 45,000 and rendered 500,000 homeless. The town of Spitak was completely destroyed (population before earthquake: 25,000).
